遥かな友に
Nijinsky had now been eight years at the ballet school and was a senior student.He was still as quiet and self-effacing as ever, still slow at book-learning, still happiest in class. Music attracted him far more than literature, but sometimes lost himself in a book; he and Bronislava read David Copperfield together in a Russian translation, and even had a go at Don Quixote, attracted by its handsome red and gold binding. His favourire composers were Rimsky- Korsakov and Wagner; and he could play a piano arrangement of the overture of 'Tannhä̈user' without a single mistake. His sight-reading was still weak, but if someone struck a chord he could tell without looking what note it was composed of.
研究滞在というほど大げさなものではないが、研究計画を採択され、それに沿った資料集めをしてきた先週。
本題とはまるで関係ないが、ニジンスキー本を借り出して、ずっと机の上にそれがあった。
バレエ・リュス（ロシアン・バレエ）を研究する人はみな読んでいる本らしいけど、初めて見た。若いころこういう素養を身につけることまでは、なかなか手が回らなかったが、当然興味はずっとあって、あちこち読むと面白い。上の一節なんか、ニジンスキーのことなんだけれど、他の誰かとかぶって見えてきたりもする。範囲はごくごく狭いけれど読書への耽溺、そして音楽に対する過敏さ。誰だったか？
もう研究滞在も過去のこと。これからのことを考えて過ごす。
